Q: Who is buildOn?
A: The Malawi School Project builds their schools with the help of buildOn. Since 1990 buildOn has constructed over 300 in developing countries including, Haiti, Malawi, Mali, Nepal, Nicaragua, Senegal, Bolivia, Brazil, and India. Each day more than 30,000 students attend buildOn schools. buildOn also sponsors 130 after school programs for students in the US.”
Q: What are the schools made from?
A: In an effort to prevent deforestation, schools are constructed from bricks made by villagers from local materials. The roofs of the schools are made from tin.
Q: Who constructs the schools?
A: The two room school houses are constructed by local villagers with the guidance of buildOn overseeing the project.
Q: How long does it take to build a school?
A: Typically it takes 8-10 weeks to complete a school from start to finish, however the schools funded by the Malawi School Project have been completed in as little as 6 weeks!
Q: Where do the teachers come from?
A: The local government and buildOn provide accredited teachers for the schools.
Q: Who attends the schools?
A: One of the requirements for buildOn to build a school is that the village commit to have an equal amount of boys and girls attend classes. The Malawi School Project also sponsors adult literacy programs, so adults have the opportunity to be educated as well.
