buildOn Once the commitment was made to begin the school building process in Malawi, the RSI youth program opened up to a partnership. It is with a great sense of gratitude and exemplified in the manner Spirit works, buildOn, (formerly known as Building with Books) showed up. buildOn has a more than 18 year history of building schools in developing countries. At the time we dedicated ourselves to build schools in Malawi, the partnership with buildOn became a perfect fit. This non-profit organization also had a current commitment to build schools in the Kusung district of Malawi, and was looking for donors. In that our model of funding more than one school, and with the desire to go and work on the site, almost independently, we presented a unique opportunity for buildOn. They have been extremely gracious in this partnership, and supportive in ways that has been overwhelming and open minded. Therefore, we are committed to a long term relationship with buildOn and the Kusungu district of Malawi. Additionally, the urban outreach /afterschool program buildOn supports, facilitates, and functions in several major US cities, which includes New York, Boston, Oakland and more. Unity Center San Diego The Unity Center of San Diego stepped up as a partner to the Malawi School Project, after Rev. Wendy Craig Purcell, the center’s founding pastor, witnessed the first DVD, WE ARE ONE, at a conference for the Association of Global New Thought. Immediately after viewing the DVD, Rev. Wendy, made a commitment to raise the funds for building a school through her center and with her youth program. A presentation followed to her congregation and to her youth group, and the fundraising efforts began. They fully funded a school in 2008 and Rev. Wendy, along with her husband John, her son John, and her daughter, Jennifer, traveled on the 2008 journey to Malawi to participate in the building of the schools. Rev. Wendy has a commitment to “Spiritually motivated social action”, and this project is in alignment with her vision.
